Virginia Drive Detour Information

Bridge Construction Update (as of 6/30/2017)

The Virginia Drive Bridges Reconstruction project and Rapp Run Culvert Replacement project are part of Upper Dublin Township’s ongoing program of infrastructure improvement in the Fort Washington Office Park.

We recognize that this construction has been an inconvenience for many people, and we thank you for your patience.

Bridge and Culvert Completions

We are happy to report that the two bridges on Virginia Drive are scheduled to be completed on time by Friday, June 30th.  The replacement of the culvert on Virginia Drive to the west (by Rush Gear) is scheduled for completion on the following Friday, July 7th.

So on June 30, Virginia Drive from Camp Hill Rd. to Susquehanna Rd. will reopen to allow local access for 1015 through 1075 Virginia Drive.  On Friday July 7th, the remaining section of Virginia Drive will open and reconnect through to the west (towards Pennsylvania Ave.), and the Virginia Drive detours will be removed.

The ‘No Turns’ restriction will return to the Virginia Drive - Camp Hill Rd intersection on July 7th. One traffic lane in each direction will be established from the culvert (Rush Gears) to 1075 Virginia Drive since there will still be construction activity and the next project will begin in the fall.

Next Phases

All roadways will remain open to vehicular traffic during the remainder of this improvement program.

Starting this fall, the Virginia Drive roadway redesign (Road Diet) and Cross-County Trail construction project will begin, with the first of four phases. The second and third phases are fully funded and will be constructed in 2018 and 2019. The fourth and final phase along Delaware Drive has received funding commitments, with additional grants being sought to reduce the local funding obligation. Construction is estimated for 2019 and 2020.

Roadway Redesign

To improve public safety, a “road diet” will be created along sections of Commerce Drive, Delaware Drive and Virginia Drive. The roadway will be narrowed from four traffic lanes to three, with one travel lane in each direction and a common center turn lane. Stormwater drainage and roadway pavement conditions will continue to be improved.

Cross County Trail

This 2.5 mile paved multi-use trail will run parallel to Commerce, Delaware and Virginia Drives, and connect the Fort Washington Office Park from Susquehanna Road to the Fort Washington SEPTA train station at Pennsylvania Ave. Eventually it will connect with other sections of a regional trail network to the west where significant sections of trail have either been constructed or are now funded for construction.

Timing: Phase one of construction will begin September 2017 and end May, 2018. This section consists of Virginia Drive between the Rapp Run Culvert (west of Camp Hill Rd.) to 1100 Virginia Drive's western access. The road diet will be constructed and the trail will run on the north side of Virginia Drive (opposite side of the road from the Turnpike).

“Zip Ramp” and Commerce Drive

Phase two will provide enhanced access from the PA Turnpike. This quick entrance (in only), located directly after the PA Turnpike Fort Washington toll plaza, will connect with Commerce Drive, between Palace of Asia/Best Western Hotel and TruMark Financial Credit Union. A new signalized intersection will be installed at the current right angle turn. The project will also construct the road diet along a section of Commerce Drive and the next section of Cross County Trail.

Timing: groundbreaking is projected for late spring 2018, with an approximate project duration of 12 months.

Phase 3 – Cross County Trail construction will occur along Virginia Drive from 1100 Virginia Drive to the park entrance at Susquehanna Road.

Timing: fall 2018 construction start, with an approximate project duration of 6 months.

Phase 4 - road diet and trail construction along Delaware and Virginia Drive will complete the 2.5 mile Cross County Trail and associated roadway improvements.  Construction is projected to begin in 2019.

Upper Dublin Township values the important commitment that our businesses and property owners have made to locate here. Due to the Fort Washington Office Park’s aging infrastructure, the Township has embarked on a major revitalization effort, with a number of improvement projects now in varying stages of planning and development. Here is an update on the initiative.

The Virginia Drive Detour began June 6, 2016.

Pine Run & Rapp Run Bridges Detour Plan

Bridge Replacement

Immediately, three structurally-deficient bridges on Virginia Drive are scheduled for total replacement. Unfortunately this will require road closure and construction detours in the Office Park.  Reconstruction of the first two bridges will happen concurrently, to minimize the impact. Here are the details:

Bridge locations:

  1. Virginia Drive, at the traffic signal by DeVry University
  2. Virginia Drive, between Camp Hill Road and Verizon

  • There will be two detours – one for through-traffic and one for only the businesses located between the two bridges:  1005, 1015, 1035, 1050 and 1075 Virginia Drive.
  • Virginia Drive Detour Plan - Local Traffic
  • Virginia Drive Detour Plan - Thru Traffic
  • Turns will be permitted at Virginia and Camp Hill Road, as this is the signed detour route, and stop signs will be added for Virginia Drive approaches. Heading eastbound, Virginia Drive will make a left onto Camp Hill Road to follow the detour. Heading Westbound, contractor vehicles will be approaching the intersection. There will be new, temporary stop signs for both.

Start date: End of April 2016

Duration: End of June 2017

We are working with our contractors to minimize the impact on traffic during the upcoming construction.  Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.
