General Qualifications for the position of Patrol Officer:

  • Be a citizen of the United States.
  • Be at least 21 years old.
  • Be physically, medically, and psychologically fit for the performance of the duties of a police officer.
  • Have a valid Pennsylvania driver's license before appointment.
  • Have a minimum of sixty (60) college credits or an Associate's or Bachelor's degree from a nationally accredited college or university.
    • As an alternative to the sixty (60) college credits, an applicant may instead have:
      • Three (3) years of experience as a duly certified municipal, federal or state police officer, OR
      • At least three (3) years of active-duty service in any branch of the United States Armed Forces.
  • Of good moral character.

Hiring Steps:

  1. Review General Qualifications
  2. Complete Test Registration
  3. Complete Written Test
  4. Complete Physical Agility Test
  5. Complete Oral Examination (Interview)
  6. Complete Personal Data Questionnaire 
  7. Background Investigation is performed
  8. Complete Polygraph Examination
  9. Receive Conditional Offer of Employment
    • Complete Medical Examination
      • Including Drug Testing
    • Complete Psychological Examination
  10. Begin Employment
    • Probation (1 year)
      • Police Academy (if necessary)
    • Field Training & Evaluation Program
      • Approximately five (5) months (concurrent with probation)
    • Assignment to a Platoon
    • Full Employment (after one year of probationary status)
