SUMMARY:
The School Crossing Guard position is a part-time, seasonal position. An employee in this position understands and works effectively with people of differing cultures and is responsible to provide the safety of students crossing designated street intersection(s) or crosswalks by escorting students across such roadways in an efficient and effective manner. A School Crossing Guard is not a member of the uniformed Police Department of a municipality and does not perform police duties.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the direction of the Police Communications Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervise crossing of roadways by students.
- Utilize due caution and display crossing sign; maintain crossing guard equipment.
- Coordinate the flow of students across selected intersection(s) with the flow of vehicle traffic and traffic control devices.
- Observe all related traffic regulations and safety guidelines.
- Note and report pedestrian right-of-way.
- Monitor and control student behavior at crossings according to established guidelines.
- Intervene in potential emergency situations for the purpose of minimizing injury to students.
- Communicate to supervisor observations and/or incidents that may impact the general well-being of students.
- Prepare and submit timely reports to school administration, as required.
- Interact positively and courteously with all members of the community.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school education or equivalent.
- Training related to safety, traffic control and issues related specifically to position.
NECESSARY OCCUPATIONAL TRAITS:
- Knowledge: Knowledge in traffic regulations and safety guidelines related to student crossing. Knowledgeable of the guidelines for monitoring and controlling student behavior at crossings.
- Skills: Skill in interpersonal relationships using tact, patience and courtesy, particularly with respect to students. Skill in oral and written communication and record-keeping methods.
- Abilities: Willingness to wear identifying badge, vest and/or jacket. Ability to relate effectively to students, parents and staff. Ability to follow traffic regulations and safety guidelines to coordinate the flow of students across the intersection(s) with the flow of vehicle traffic and traffic control devices. Ability to control student behavior at crossings according to established guidelines. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and able to prepare and submit accurate and timely reports.
