The second annual survey ran from October 1 to October 31, 2009.
This was the second year the Historical Commission conducted the selection of the most historic properties. A collection of about twenty historic resources from Upper Dublin Township were summarized on the commission web site survey where voters could pick from that list or write in other nominations. Many of the choices presented this year were suggestions made in last year’s voting by members of the public. Properties that were selected as top ten the previous year were not eligible for voting this year.
This year’s “Top Ten” range from homes to offices to cemeteries to houses of worship. Wilmer Atkinson built one of the houses selected by the public and in his time he and his home were famous throughout the country. Architect Wilson Eyre designed two of the selected sites and Milton Bean, the architect who designed Dr. Mattison’s Castle designed another selected property. Many of the selected resources have no architects of record, but contribute to the rich visual history of the Township.

The Upper Dublin Township Board of Commissioners passed a Historic Preservation Ordinance on November 14, 2006. The ordinance protects the most important historic resources from demolition while providing a process for discussion with owners of additional resources to consider alternatives to demolition. Ordinance #1175 establishes a Historical Commission to advise the Board of Commissioners regarding historic preservation matters.
A special Historic Preservation Inventory Committee completed a township-wide inventory of potential historic properties and structures that could fall under the ordinance.
The ordinance and the inventory can downloaded by visiting the Documents & Forms page under Historical Commission.
